Who doesn’t love flowers, even better, receiving them? However, stepping into a flower shop is not unlike walking into a garden, relieving me of stress and letting me wander without a care. Rows upon rows of buckets filled with gorgeous flowers, the fragrance, colours, and textures are in abundance. I love them, merely escaping with my favourite, Casablanca lilies, if anything, for their scent filling the room.

Trimming the stems and arranging these decadent beauties in a vase is therapeutic. So, once I’m satisfied, it’s finding the perfect resting spot with the best vantage point for everyone to enjoy.

“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day —like writing a poem or saying a prayer…”

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Although it’s officially summer, you wouldn’t know it here in Vancouver; what’s with the rain?! Usually, this is the best time of year to enjoy your favourite flowers, whatever they may be. I fondly remember my garden, old English roses, peonies, lavender, hydrangeas and Casablanca lilies. You don’t need to spend a lot or buy vast quantities. I love a large floral arrangement; however, the simplicity of a single bud is perfection at its best.

In addition, according to a study by Rutgers University, “the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behaviour in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.” There you have it! Your reason to surround yourself with beautiful flowers. By the way, you shouldn’t need a reason.

I love how flowers make me feel, triggering my brain chemicals: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, activating my happiness. Who knew a cheery bloom had so much flower power, putting a smile on our faces and brightening our homes?
