This morning (5 am, to be exact), my girlfriend texted me, seeking advice on where to find a mother-of-the-bride dress for her daughter’s upcoming September wedding. Despite the early morning and the fact that it’s only January, she’s already eager to start the shopping process. It might be a bit early to hit the stores, but there’s no harm in doing a bit of window shopping, right? Post-Christmas is an excellent time to scout for sales on holiday wear—think all that glitters and beautiful silks and taffeta if that’s your style.
I’ve been a bridesmaid more times than I can count. You know that saying, “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride”? Well, it was starting to feel like my reality. I’ve witnessed some truly questionable dress choices—real doozies! When it came time for my own wedding dress, thankfully proving the saying wrong, the search was frustrating. Even with the freedom to choose, I struggled to find a dress that truly reflected me. Back then, there was no internet, so the quest for the perfect dress was lengthy. Even when I finally settled on one, it still wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned.
Given that, shopping for a mother-of-the-bride (MOB) and mother-of-the-groom (MOG) dress shouldn’t be an overly stressful experience. There are an endless amount of dress choices, it’s just knowing where to find them. Now’s the time to engage in some online window shopping and get a sense of what your likes and dislikes are.
Firstly, remember, you’re not one of the bridesmaids, so there’s no need to go matchy-matchy with colour and style. Also, take into account the venue – is it a black-tie affair or a laid-back garden party? Have some fun with your outfit; feel free to be bold, opt for a classic look, and even a bit sexy. Just remember not to steal the show, and whatever you do, avoid wearing white!
As the mother of the bride or groom, you play a unique role, and your outfit should reflect your personality. Be authentic, choose something that resonates with you, and enjoy the process of finding the perfect attire for the special occasion.
Whether you love or hate Victoria Beckham, there’s no denying she took a bold risk with her liquid silver slip dress featuring a special Chantilly lace trim. Personally, I’m a fan, but my friend, not so much. Beckham faced some criticism for her choice, but it perfectly captures her distinctive style and personality. I mean, come on, it’s stunning!
There are so many choices…
So for fun, and to lend a helping hand to my friend – because, really, who doesn’t enjoy a good dress shopping spree? – I’ve selected a few options or inspirations for the occasion. Fingers crossed, none are doozies;)
Vintage Gowns
If you haven’t delved into the world of vintage shopping, now’s your moment. Numerous websites offer an array of unique vintage fashions, but my ultimate favourite is 1st Dibs—an e-commerce haven for luxury items. And let’s dispel the myth that ‘vintage’ means affordable; these styles can be exquisite but might not be easy on the wallet. Fair warning: it’s highly addictive.
Enjoy!
