Reimagining the LBD

“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself…” Coco Chanel

Fashion historians suggest that the little black dress (LBD) originates from the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel. Not shocking. The style was intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, and widely accessible. Unsurprisingly, Chanel’s designs continue to retain their timeless allure and maintain a prominent position in the fashion industry.

What’s more, the LBD still has the staying power it had when Coco Chanel imagined the iconic dress.

Let’s celebrate

It’s been a while since we’ve had an opportunity to don our LBD. We’re just returning to life after a pandemic and seemingly jumping back in with both feet. However, I’m still at “Should I wear this pair of jeans or this pair?” Hello? Haven’t we all been living in sweats and jeans for the past few years? And now that we FINALLY have somewhere to go, we’re at a loss for what to wear.

Or at least that’s my story.

If anything, I’m guilty of wearing the same same, and I am trying to break out of my pandemic rut. Especially now, with an upcoming event, I was shopping my closet for something formal to wear. So naturally, I had a specific dress in mind for the occasion. And there she was, ready and hanging. A gorgeous red Victoria Beckham mid-length (suck-in-your-gut) formfitting dress with vented long sleeves and a plunging neckline. It’s classic at its best.

Hmmm… it seems to be fitting a little tighter than I remembered;)

Who doesn’t love a LBD?

Wearing a black dress is safe. There. I said it. I own several myself. I’m not saying never wear your LBD, but honestly, It’s time to have some fun! At the moment, I’m craving something different, a statement piece with colour, sequins or glitter. Hell, why not all of the above? And yes, I was a magpie in a past life. So, anything shiny and bright makes me smile, particularly during the holiday season.

In an ocean full of black dresses, colour catches the eye and stands out. Wearing colour is an experience in itself. For me, it’s about confidence and individuality. I fear that so many of us are afraid to stand out. I say, forget that shit. Wear what makes you feel beautiful, and with that comes confidence.

Why would we want to dress the same? You are you…

Let’s reimagine the iconic LBD by switching it up with colour, interesting design elements and sparkles! The choices are endless.

Now is the perfect opportunity to express yourself with fashion and get out of your comfort zone of same same. Instead, choose to wear something that truly speaks to your personality.

Here are a few inspirational looks I love and will get you started.
