Essentially, I'm your friend down the street who started blogging, and then life threw lemons (AKA Divorce), and suddenly I found myself here, talking to you!

Still in Paris

It’s been four months since I packed my life into a few suitcases (three to be exact) and set off for Paris, the first stop on this year-long adventure. A third of the journey has passed, and yet it feels both like a blink and a lifetime. There are things I miss about home, but none strong enough to make me want to return (sorry)—though I’ll admit, having a dryer would make laundry days easier. Obviously, I miss my sons too!

The most common question I’m asked is, “What do you do every day?”—as if there couldn’t possibly be enough to fill the time. Let me assure you, there’s no shortage of things to do. First, let’s get the everyday stuff out of the way: grocery shopping, laundry, unloading the dishwasher, vacuuming and cooking meals, which I enjoy and look forward to shopping for on market days. Living here means we still have a daily routine, just like we did back home. And naturally, I have my writing to keep me busy, and you informed, “You’re welcome!” By the way, did I mention I’ve just finished writing a book?!

One thing we’ve fallen behind on (and I’m stressing about) is getting back to the gym! A friend recommended we visit La Montgolgiere, a fitness club, which I’m super excited to try when we’re back in Paris for the summer.

What we’ve been up to

Where do I even begin? Every day feels like an adventure. Some mornings, we set off for a walk and don’t make it back to the apartment until dinner. Then there are the rainy days when we exchange a glance and a pair of raised eyebrows: “Museum day?” Or maybe, “Should we just stay in?”

We’ve hit the majors, discovered new favourites, and still have several places on the “to go” list. Slowly but surely, we’re uncovering the layers of Paris, including new neighbourhoods. As for churches and cathedrals, there’s no shortage—and it’s usually Rob urging, “Let’s check it out!” It’s not that I don’t like churches; I think I’ve had my fill. Maybe it’s the last trip to Italy, where there seemed to be a church on every corner of every block! That said, nothing could have prepared us for the reopening of Notre Dame. Incredible! It’s even more stunning than before—if that’s even possible.

We attended a ballet at the Palais Garnier, and Rob was a great sport about going. Giving him the sell, “It’s kind of like watching a hockey game at Madison Square Garden.” In other words, it’s not really about the ballet or the hockey—it’s about experiencing something iconic, seeing it in its natural element. I can safely say it was a fabulous evening, including the delicious hamburger that was devoured afterwards.

Making Friends

We’ve had visits from family and friends (thank you for stopping by!) and even met some wonderful locals along the way, which speaks to how warm and welcoming the French can be. We’ve hit it off, and now there are plenty of plans in the works. So fun!

Cafés and more

Food is a big part of our day. Lol, I’m stating the obvious! Whether grabbing a quick lunch on the go or cooking at home, the conversation always starts with, “I’m getting hungry, how about you?” and the answer is always, “Yes!” The choices are endless, it’s like being a kid in a candy store, “How can I pick just one (fill in the blank)?” We’ve also got our own little rule for dining out—benchmark pricing is based on the l’soupe à l’oignon. Anything over 13 euros? It’s usually a tourist trap.

Shopping

Shopping counts as a pastime, right? Well, in my book, it does! 😉 Those beautiful storefronts are impossible to resist—they’re practically calling my name! Yup! They are. Unfortunately, my visa card confirms this! And it turns out I’m not the only one who likes to shop. Eh-hem, Rob?

Travel

We traveled to Reims for a day of Champagne tasting, learning about the region’s rich history of winemaking. Brussels was an easy choice, being so close and offering the best combo, Belgian waffles, beer, and chocolate. And then there was Strasbourg, which felt like stepping into a holiday postcard with its famous Christmas market—twinkling lights, the scent of mulled wine, and the festive stalls lining the cobblestone streets. Each destination brought its own unique magic and added new layers to our adventure.

We decided to spend the holidays with Rob’s family in London, but not before taking a little detour to the Maldives. That’s right—another bucket list item checked off!

London for the holidays

I mean, Christmas in London? Home to Dickens and a Christmas Carol? It was the quintessential holiday destination, and it didn’t disappoint, except for the crowds! Wow! Where the heck did everyone come from? Here’s another photo dump 🙂

What’s Next

It’s freezing in Paris, so we’re chasing the sun to Málaga, Spain, where we’ll set up base camp for a month. Rob has lined up a few trips—Granada, including the Alhambra, Córdoba, and Seville—and we’re trying to see if we can squeeze in a little getaway to Marrakech. That’s a wait-and-see for now. We’re excited to immerse ourselves in Spanish culture. And since I’ve got my Latino, what better way to experience it? Cervezas, por favor!

After our month in Spain, it’s back to France for three weeks in March, where we’ll settle in the charming town of Pézenas. This area is completely new to us, so we’re excited to dive into everything it offers. Nestled in the heart of the Languedoc region, Pézenas is known for its rich history, artisan shops, and vibrant markets. We’re looking forward to wandering its cobblestone streets and soaking up the southern French charm.

From there, it’s off to Italy—12 days in Rome, a week in Positano, and time exploring Puglia—before heading back to France to experience Nice and Provence. Plenty of adventures are ahead, and hopefully, the gym, too, so stay tuned for the stories to come!
