Castillon-du-Gard and a Michelin Hotel

Stop the presses!

Let me interrupt my planned blog post for a little gem I just have to share. If you’re dreaming of a getaway to Provence, add this one to your list—trust me.

One of the best things about traveling without a rigid plan or tight schedule is the freedom to follow your curiosity. A spontaneous stop here or there often leads to the most memorable finds. That’s exactly what happened when we set out to visit Uzès (technically a neighbour to Provence)—a bit of a hoof from Eguilles, our home base (one hour and 56 minutes to be exact). It’s a commitment. Honestly, we could’ve saved it for another trip; but we were game!

And that’s where Castillon-du-Gard comes in.

This tiny hilltop village wasn’t on the itinerary—in fact, it was recommended, thanks to two lovely women we met at the market in Uzès. (Oh hey, Danielle and Wendy—that’s you!) They insisted we check it out, and wow, were they right. We found a quiet, charming village—cobbled streets, worn shutters, and views that make you exhale a little slower. LOL, even the cats look happy. 🐈🐈

But it gets better

We literally stumbled into Hotel Le Vieux Castillon, a beautiful, unassuming five-star boutique hotel tucked into the village. But don’t panic, shoulder season is a great time to come. 😉

Honestly, if you didn’t notice the signs, you would miss it. That said, from the outside, you’d never guess what awaits inside—elegant interiors, a serene terrace, and that pool with the view. There’s nothing stuffy or pretentious here, just friendly, professional staff at your service. It’s the surprise that makes wandering without a plan so worthwhile.

Did I mention Le Vieux Castillon is a Michelin key hotel? Yes! What started as a casual “let’s just stay for a drink” quickly turned into “we should stay!” We lucked out and snagged the last room for two nights. Because let’s be clear, when you stumble upon somewhere as lovely as Le Vieux Castillon, you just know it’s something special.

There’s a nice selection of rooms, ranging from standard options to your own terrace suite. We stayed in a deluxe room that was spacious, elegant, and a perfect blend of French charm and comfort.

And if you’re after total relaxation, there’s the Spa by Clarins—yes please to a little more pampering, s’il vous plaît!

From the lush gardens to the inviting outdoor dining room and lounge area, it just kept getting better.

Castillon-du-Gard may be tiny, but it’s got everything you’d hope for—a handful of cute little restaurants and boutiques, obviously a church (it is France), and even a bar where you can settle in with a glass of something local. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t try too hard—and doesn’t have to. Fun fact: the village has Roman roots, thanks to its close ties to the nearby Pont du Gard. We came with zero expectations and left a little bit smitten. 🤩
