Just when I think I’ve seen it all, Paris proves me wrong. Over the years, I’ve wandered through some of the city’s most iconic museums, but lately, I’ve stumbled—literally—upon a few hidden gems.

Let’s be honest, Paris isn’t exactly short on museums. The idea of visiting every single one in a lifetime feels almost impossible. Okay, maybe I’m being dramatic, but seriously, how could anyone see it all? Take the Louvre, for example—I’ve been there more times than I can count, and I’m still convinced I haven’t seen half of it.

So, for something new and different, here are my new favourites, drum roll please….

Musée Carnavalet – A Walk Through Parisian History

The Musée Carnavalet, tucked away in the Marais, is the oldest museum in Paris and a charming tribute to the city. Housed in two gorgeous mansions (I couldn’t help but imagine the incredible dinner parties I’d throw here), it had me from the cobblestone courtyard to the meticulously curated exhibits covering everything from pre-Revolutionary times to modern-day Paris.

After being closed for five years, the museum reopened in 2021 following extensive renovations. The updates have brought a fresh vibrancy to the space, making it as visually stunning as informative. I could wander for hours, marvelling at its displays of historical maps, letters, photographs, paintings, and archeological finds. It’s the perfect place to soak in the essence of Paris. Even better? Admission is free!

Fondation Louis Vuitton – Where Art Meets Architecture

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is more than a museum—it’s an experience. Designed by Frank Gehry, the building itself is a masterpiece, a fusion of glass and steel and nestled in the Bois de Boulogne. Inside, the ever-changing contemporary art exhibits keep me coming back. It’s a little out of the way, but the trek is worth it, especially if you combine it with a stroll in the surrounding park. Watch for new exhibitions prior to your trip, and book ahead online.

The new exhibit Pop Forever is absolutely brilliant—and you have until February 24, 2025, to check it out.

The Musée National Picasso – A Renovated Gem

The Musée Picasso, housed in a breathtaking (yes, overused, but it fits) hôtel particulier in the Marais, is another museum that left me completely wowed. Since its renovation (is this even the same place?), it has gone from great to exceptional. The exhibits not only celebrate Picasso’s genius but also spotlight his influence on modern art. The curation feels intimate, offering a window into his creative process, his muses, and his enduring legacy.

The temporary exhibition dedicated to American artist Jackson Pollock is on display until January 19, 2025. If you’re in Paris or planning to be, GO! It’s incredible—probably the most Pollocks ever gathered under one roof!

Honourable Mention

Grand Palais – An Icon

Though technically a convention center, the Grand Palais is so much more. Its enormous glass-domed architecture alone is worth a visit, but what makes it truly exceptional are the exhibits it hosts. From blockbuster art shows to cutting-edge contemporary showcases, and let’s not forget Fashion Week!

The Grand Palais recently underwent renovations, and I had never had the chance to visit—until now. The Paris Photo exhibit was held there for four days in early November, so naturally, I saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. It was fabulous, and I would expect nothing less.

Annnd, this holiday season, the Grand Palais transforms into the largest temporary ice arena in the world—of course! I’d better sharpen my ice skates 😉
