Aging

I can see them; they’re there—my wrinkles.

My skin is dry and sometimes itchy; must remember to use more moisturizer. If I squint carefully, I can see the scaly, saggy skin that will eventually catch up with me in my later golden years. Yes, I wear sunscreen, but back in the day, the best we had was SPF 8, and if we were lucky SPF 15! So, I guess I’m part of the first generation of sunscreen devotees.

I’ve been colouring my hair more frequently. My new best friend? A can of L’Oréal Magic Retouch, perfect for concealing my white Pepe Le Pew hairline between salon visits. I’m not planning on going grey anytime soon.

My metabolism has s l o w w w e d down. I count my calories and work out, and yet, that excess roll, better known as a muffin top, is still there. Why?!!

Men-a-who?

As for menopause, I somehow came through it unscathed (sorry, don’t hate me) without a single symptom, nothing. Well, except for that one week in Italy. Was it a hot flash or just mild temperatures I overdressed for? I’m still not sure.

It’s Inevitable

I know that rather than balk at the natural process of aging; we should celebrate it as a testament to a life well-lived. I mean, what other choice do we have? There’s no point in being upset—boo hoo, I’m old—or we can take on a more positive spin: I got this! Now, where’s my Botox? LOL.

Aging Gracefully?

I can’t stop it, and I won’t let it take me down without a fight. Is it wrong? Ultimately, whether it’s “wrong” to fight aging depends on the individual and the means by which one chooses to do so. The most important aspect is to make choices that align with personal values and contribute to overall well-being. In the end, it’s my decision, and I’m “cool” with it 😉

Aging doesn’t have to be about gracefully slipping into the next stage of life. Seriously, I’m not ready for any seniors home (Hell, NO!) and if I take proper steps, I should be able to live out my years independently, as my mom did at 102. For some of us, it’s about grabbing life by the horns and making the most of every moment. Fighting aging isn’t about denying the passage of time; it’s about redefining what it means to grow older. Here’s why this mindset is not just acceptable but actually pretty cool:

Health and Well-being

Maintaining a youthful spirit (in my mind, I’m 25) often involves staying active, eating well, and keeping our minds sharp. These habits lead to a healthier, more vibrant life, regardless of age. It’s not about clinging to youth but maximizing our potential at every stage. American businesswoman and style icon Iris Apfel comes to mind and embodies aging on her terms and seizing life by the horns.

Mirror, mirror

Whether it’s a touch of Botox (a close personal friend of mine), a bit of filler (thinking about it), or a high-end skincare routine (yup!), there’s no shame in wanting to look as young as you feel. These choices can boost confidence and allow you to put your best face forward—literally. It’s about feeling great when you look in the mirror.

Cultural Shifts

Society is beginning to recognize that aging can be a powerful, positive experience. Celebrities and influencers (there’s a whole new breed) who embrace this mindset are setting new standards, showing that aging can be stylish, dynamic, and anything but dull. In fact, aging has become cool. Sorry, millennials and Gen Z’s, you’ve got nothing on us!

Physiological Benefits

Taking steps to fight aging can have significant mental health benefits. When you feel good about how you look and feel, it’s easier to stay positive and motivated, which can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. Whatever you do, don’t feel judged; you do you!

Throw Out the Rule Book

There is no universal rulebook for aging. For some, leveraging modern science and technology to maintain youthfulness is a valid pursuit. It’s about personal choice and how you define your journey through life.

I, for one, am making the best of this journey with a little help from this and that. Is it wrong? Absolutely not. For the most part, I like what I see in the mirror, and more importantly, I feel great. That’s the point, right?

Fighting aging is a celebration of life, a commitment to living fully and vibrantly. It’s about making every year count and proving that growing older can be an incredible, empowering experience. In this new era, aging isn’t just cool; it’s a statement.
