TRAIN YOUR BEST

First of all, let me just say, I am not a person who obsesses about their workouts, I’m a bit of a lazy girl by nature, yes, sorry to disappoint.  I treasure my downtime on the weekends and I would much rather prefer to lounge around than hit the gym but hey, that’s just me. This is the part where I contradict myself, as much as I love to lounge, I do need to have some sort of structured exercise regime or I’ll become a bitchy girl. I find exercise to be a great stress release and I love how exhilarating I feel afterwards.

Finding a good personal trainer can be difficult, so word of mouth is important. Having just moved back to the city, I was in need of a gym close to home, and a friend introduced me to her personal trainer. That was nearly two years ago, and it suffices me to say I’m addicted to my workouts and my trainer. It’s a perfect match. Not all trainers are created equal; in fact, most people, once they’ve found the best fit, will go to great lengths to keep their trainers and follow them wherever they go.  Not unlike your hair stylist, you wouldn’t allow just anyone to cut your hair, right?

Working out with a personal trainer takes time and commitment; with that in mind, you want to make sure you and your trainer are in sync.  Meaning, personalities and goals: nothing worse than having someone set you up for failure or not having any genuine interest in you as a client. I look forward to my hour with my trainer. Tbh, there are times when I’m afraid, yes, but she knows my limits and encourages me to push myself. She wants me to succeed, which, in the end, gives us both a sense of accomplishment. Not only is she great at getting me to work my butt off, BUT (ha!) she’s become a good friend too! I love it when that happens:)

Another thing to consider is cost, my friend and I share our personal trainer, and with that, we are both able to train an extra day a week. Which is a win-win for all of us.  Not to mention, it’s fun motivating each other, or perhaps it’s a little friendly competition? Once you’ve found your trainer, ask them how you can personalize your workouts to fit your needs and budget; most trainers are more than willing to accommodate.

I can’t say enough about my/our trainer, she knows me better than myself, making me want to try harder and at the end of the day, I have benefitted.  Honestly, I have never felt better or stronger. I’m still taking my calcium pill, but I know my strength training will be what takes me into my old age.

  1. Next step is to really work out… BIKE!!!! You will be amazed at what a good bike ride will do for your butt and calves, as well as your thighs. My friend from Vancouver talks about the awesome, challenging climbs on the roads there, as well as the blood chilling singletrack at Whistler.

    I am a bit biased towards the bike. Good for you that you are in the gym!
