Start the year with a new and healthier you

So, we’re halfway into January; how’d that happen? If you’re like me, you’re still trying to recover from the silly Christmas and New Year’s seasons. Don’t get me started on the bills; full disclosure, I was very good to myself and deserved all of it! I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions, worried I would set myself up for failure. However, the most common resolutions are to eat healthier, exercise more, and save more money. Sounds easy enough, right? And “they” say it takes 66 and up to 120 days to form a new healthy habit, which sounds like we’re all doomed.

Eating healthy is a no-brainer. Aside from the occasional Big Mac (my secret indulgence), which I think I can manage, it’s time to get serious and stop buying crap and enjoy real food. Meaning less meat, more fruits and veggies, and getting rid of white sugar. I genuinely believe it’s the silent killer. Take time for meal planning and enjoy our meals together as a family. It takes a village; get everyone involved in eating healthy, “it’s a good thing,” and yes, I just quoted Martha Stewart. By the way, even Martha is eating healthier these days. You and your family should be too.

Now for the exercising bit, I taught fitness classes for 20 years. Yes, I was one of those keen Jane Fonda wannabes (not really); however, that was the era. I shouted and bounced around to a lot of loud music and loved it. The days of teaching for me are no longer. That said, I’ve had gym memberships over the years, and now I share a personal trainer with a friend. Having a trainer has been a life-changer for me, and yes, this service has a price tag.

I’m not suggesting everyone run out and hire one, but you would be amazed at the difference. Giving up one splurge a month and using that money towards a personal trainer once a week is worth every cent. A trainer lays the grounds for success; yes, it’s an appointment that you’re accountable for. It’s funny; we can keep a dentist appointment or meet a friend for coffee, so why not a trainer or a spin class?

I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know; I’m in my 50s, and swallowing a calcium pill alone will not take me into my old age. I need to be proactive and make myself healthy and strong. Did I mention I have a lot of things to accomplish?

A personal trainer isn’t for everyone, and there are so many other ways to get yourself out there and involved in some activity. Being outdoors is a great start, walking, cycling, running, you get to decide. Join a rec centre, racketball, tennis, and yoga; it’s all available. Make this year count; make this the best new you possible.

Saving money is easier said than done. Frankly, I have been going gangbusters, calling it retail therapy. It’s okay to spoil yourself, so long as you know it has to stop. That said, I’ve stopped. The freedom to not worry about those bills is reason enough to get your finances in order. Start squirrelling away a little bit here and there, make a plan and stick to it, not unlike your new fitness regime. You will be amazed at how easy it is to save once you get into the groove, and who doesn’t want to save for something special?
Whether it takes you a day, 66 days or 120 days to get into these new healthy habits, it will be life-changing, a NEW YOU!

  1. Thank you for sharing your positive vibe through this blog. I first became exposed to WordPress and blogs in a “misery loves company” fashion. So many of your recent posts have encouragement and discovery woven into them. Life cannot always be sunshine and lollipops; however, it is refreshing when the clouds melt away and someone says “come outside with me, let’s enjoy this.” Again – many thanks!

    • Thank you:) I decided, its a new year and it’s time to expand my blog, incorporating some fun topics. I agree, life isn’t always sunshine and lollipops but damn it if I’m going to let those dark clouds come and rain on my parade. Right?! I’ll try to incorporate some easy dishes for you single men out there;)
